Exotic or foreign-looking
Madeline Peoples, 23, identifies as African American and White, while others see her as “just mixed with Black,” she said. Throughout her life, she has experienced colorism firsthand in her own community.
“I have seen how others compliment women who are lighter-skinned,” she said. The comments extend to “being called exotic or foreign-looking, asking what they are mixed with, complimenting their different or big, voluminous hair, asking if they can touch it,” she said.
