Media sustains the negative stereotypes and internalized racism

Brittany Jasper, 20, born and raised in southeastern San Diego, identifies as a Black woman. She has a cinnamon skin color, and people often believe she is mixed with “Black and something,” she says. When asked how traditional media perpetuates colorism, she said:

"Media sustains the negative stereotypes and internalized racism that our communities have perpetuated for so many centuries.When it comes to hearing women’s stories, preference is typically given to the more aesthetically pleasing individual which, as we know, is often lighter-skinned.”
